The college of Jamestown has been notable for three things: its athletics, its academic success, specifically in science and nursing programs, and its choir. In 1979, it's football group went to the NAIA Division II national Championships. Jamestown's pre-scientific students have a long-standing subculture of larger-than-normal medical university acceptance premiums, two scholars have long gone on to turn out to be Rhodes students, and one has earned the Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics.

Within the mid-1980s, a tricky farm financial system, along with alleged mismanagement by way of a few former college administration officials, led the university into complex times; in 1986, the tuition graduated 92 scholars, had a full-time enrollment of most effective 500 scholars and reportedly came within 24 hours of closing its doors. A couple of 11th-hour donations and a few radical restructuring brought the school again from the brink. The fundraising charge was led via Marvin E. Seibold ('56) and R.G. "Bob" Lyngstad who shaped the "Committee of a hundred"—a bunch of 100 donors who each gave $10,000 to preserve the university open.
